tiny box / big city

I have now lived and worked in this crazy, 41-zip codes deep behemoth of a city for one week and I have never felt more like an ant slash also I really like it.  I will get my shit together (read: wash my dishes, the tiny box's kitchen was very obviously built for someone who only eats cereal and orders take-out) and post real stuff very soon.  For now, here are some things that are impacting my life.

Oh my god I just reread that paragraph.  I'm living in New York City for the summer.  My studio apartment is very small.  I don't know, maybe I could have been vaguer if I was really trying.  Anyway.

A new Dia de lo Muertos-y cuff bracelet.

One of my favorite summer dinners, photographed on my fire escape (!!!!! I am new enough to extreme urban living that this is still romantic/cool).

The casual return of my favorite show to television.  Harvey Specktor for President, Donna for Life Coach/Best Friend, all in favor say aye.  Also just watch that clip.

And of course:

Dear Subway,
I am learning you so much.  I have taken you incorrectly a number of times.  But you are good and nice, and I like you.  With my iPhone in hand I know exactly how to use you mostly sometimes!  Thank you for my monthly pass.

shake it up.

Angie dress conspicuously worn here, Betsey Johnson heels ugh RIP
Air drying my hair while also ripping off balcony blogging, six stories up rather than than twenty-six but I've got the Pacific as a backdrop so I'm without shame.

See?  See?  Ocean.  Plus a nipped waist, pockets, grandma floral reminiscent of curtains/couch/nightgown, yes please.  Somehow vacation makes me completely incapable of wearing jewelry of any kind or, really, putting any sort of concerted effort into my general appearance, so this might be the best I get for the week.  Showerhair and inappropriate footwear and all.  Ah well.

knot in your stomach, phlegm in your throat.

American: Eagle cutoffs, Apparel button down
Breaking up the established vacation uniform of bro tanks and running shorts with some denim on denim action.

So far, island life has meant crispy salt water hair, waytoomuch fruit, watching my sister lose her sunglasses to the ocean, consuming a stupid amount of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives: BBQ Edition, listening to music that makes me sad (?!?!? why), accidentally dropping my David Foster Wallace into the pool, going to bed early and taking long baths.  Today I plunged into the Pacific at like 7:30 AM in a cap and googles (nerd! nerd! huge nerd!) and swam out until my body yelled, "You are not on swim team anymore, Kendra!  Its been a while since you were good at this!  You should probably stop before you die!!!!"  It felt really good despite the chewing out I received from my own anatomy.

Oh yeah I also rolled down a hill and got covered with every burr on all of Maui.  So.  Its been great.

dead to the world.

A coma-inducing meal with the exact right amount of spice that you're going to have to figure out on your own because I have no quantitative documentation as to how it happened, very sorry.  With All Recipes as our (loose) guide, one hungry and always-down-for-a-culinary-romp amigo and I messed around in my kitchen and created our own version of chicken tikka masala.

After I ate it for dinner, I actually passed out for 4.5 hours.  I woke up at 1:36 AM.  I had no idea where I was or what day it was but I was still SO FULL.

I don't know, man.  You should probably just make this.

Chicken Tikka Masala
adapted from All Recipes
serves 2

2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 cup plain nonfat greek yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 8oz. can tomato sauce
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon butter

And now, with no measurements, the spices:
ginger powder
garlic salt

In a medium bowl, mix yogurt, lemon juice, tomato sauce and cream.  Procure the spices from the list and set them in a line on your counter.  Look at them for a long time, and then start shaking them randomly into your bowl.  Taste your sauce and keep seasoning until it tastes like something you want to bathe in.  When that happens, stick your chicken breasts in the bowl and let sit for a few minutes.

Melt butter over medium heat in a large skillet.  Add sauce and chicken to skillet, spooning sauce to cover the chicken.  Cook for five minutes, allowing to sauce to thicken big time, turning the chicken halfway through.

Spoon the thickened sauce from the skillet into a separate bowl to use later.  Cut the chicken into chunks and allow to finish cooking in the skillet.

Plate --> heated naan --> white rice --> chicken chunks --> a lot of sauce -->  a random sprig of cilantro for color no reason. The end.
